Lucinda,
I agree, being honest right from the start is the smart strategy. You will have many highly transferable skills from your years in real estate. The challenge that you are no doubt face is persuading a hiring manager that you aren't just riding out the economy until the real estate industry picks up. You can do this by demonstrating, both through your cover letter, resume and networking efforts that you have already made a commitment to transition the new industry. You might, for example, start researching verticals/companies that specialize in business to consumer sales using a relationship-selling and solution-selling model, because these types of organizations are most likely to value your people-skills. You might join industry associations and attend their workshops/seminars/networking events. When you write your resume, speak to the skills/successes that are going to matter most to the target company - this doesn't mean dumbing down, it just means being focused with your message.
Good luck!

Karen,
I am looking for a company where I can grow and learn and hope that they will accept my resume for positions where I am "over qualified". Most companies want specific industry expereince and mine is in residential real estate. As there are no jobs in real estate marketing I am hoping for a "lower level" position so I can learn a new industry. The temptation to "dumb down" is strong but I rather be honest right from the start.
